After spending all day at the park with Miche and his mom, Mello threw himself onto his bed around 6 P.M. His father would be home soon, but he didn't care. He slowly drifted off to sleep, listening to the noises of his mother preparing dinner downstairs.
He awoke, hours later, to the smell of smoke. He opened his eyes, not knowing what time it was, thinking that his mother had just burnt something for dinner. Everything was a golden color, thinking his hair was in the way, Mello swept his hands across his face, but the golden didn't go away. He soon noticed how hot it was.
"Oh no!" He screamed as he shot up out of bed and ran to his door.
He could see the flames growing up the stairs and soon as he opened the door. They were already past his mother and father's room.
"No! No!" He yelled again, "Mom! Dad! Where are you?" He cried as he looked around.
"Mi?" He heard his brother say his nickname.
"Miche! Where are you?!" He looked around again, letting his eyes meet the door closer to the stairs than his.
"Mi! Help me! I-I can't open the door! It's t-to hot." His brother cried from his bedroom.
"Don't move Miche! I'll be right there!" Mello ran into his room and rushed out the window onto the roof. He climbed across the hot tiles to his brother's window and banged on it. Miche rushed over and tried to open it. When it wouldn't work, he got his desk chair and signaled for Mello to move back. After bursting open the window, Miche climbed out, getting scratches from the glass.
"What about Mom and Dad?!" He cried as he hugged Mello, who's feet were now burning hot from the fire below.
"I-I don't know, Miche! But we have to jump! C'mon!" Mello grabbed his brother's wrist and lead him to the end of the roof.
"Mi..What if we get hurt?"
"We'll get hurt more if we stay up here." Mello, still holding on to Miche's wrists, jumped off the roof.
Mello quickly stood up after tumbling onto the ground, hard.
"Miche? You okay?" Mello slowly tested his body.
"Y-Yeah. Mihael, what do we do now?"
"..Wait for the fire people..I guess.." Mello looked up at the burning house with sad eyes.
(Mom..)
About 30 minutes later, the firemen finally showed up. Mello and Micha had been watching the house burn. The whole top floor had already caved in, and the whole house was black. A fireman saw Mello and Miche run around the house, to the front.
"H-Hey!" He shouted in a surprised voice to the other firemen, "Kids!"
The man walked up to them, Miche was in tears, and Mello was trying to be strong.
"Mister!" Miche cried, "Our mom and dad are in there!"
The fireman turned to the house, staring sadly. He couldn't tell a child that his parents were more dead by now.
"You kids stay right here." He said and walked over to the other firemen. He was telling them something, but Mello couldn't hear. He just sat on the ground and buried his face in his knees and sobbed. Miche soon hugged him and joined in.
Later, a police man walked over to them.
"Boys? Hello, I'm Officer Freeman." He held out his hand for them to shake, but they both rejected."Ahem, anyway. I would like for you boys to come with me to the police station."
Mello looked over at the house. The fire had been put out, and the firemen were digging through the blackened remains.
"Why do we need to go with you?" Miche asked.
Officer Freeman sighed, "Because we have to find out what to do with you boys.Mello's eyes widened, although he'd known all a long, it just hit him like a huge rock. His parents were dead. They really were dead. He began to sob even greater than before as the officer led them to the car.
At the police station, people were running around like crazy, looking at the boys with sad eyes.
"Excuse me," Mello stopped the officer who had brought them there. "What is going to happen to us?"
"Well," They officer looked around for a moment, "We only found your mother's body in the house. Do you boys know where your father was?"
"Work." Miche answered, staring at his feet.
"He never returned home?"
"No," Mello chimed in,"if he wasn't there, then he never did. I was asleep, so I don't know."
"Mihael's right. Mom and I ate dinner alone..Mom kept wondering where Dad was.." Miche started to cry again.
"Well, then, boys..We'll keep you here over-night and see if your father shows up, because this is a great sign that he is alive, but if he doesn't within the nest 24 hours, We'll have to put you in an orphanage." Officer Freeman said, "We're also going to do some research on your father's job, and on how the house burned down..There might be a reason he didn't come home."
Mello looked at the officer in shock. "Are you saying that our father might have known that the house was going to burn, and he didn't tell us?!"
"Pretty smart, aren't you?" The officer looked at Mello,"I don't know that for sure, Mihael, but that possibility is always there."
Mello just stared at nothing as the officer walked off.
"Y-You don't think dad would do that, right, Mi?" Miche looked at Mello with the worst face he'd ever seen.
"I don't know, Miche..If someone did try to hurt us, or Dad, maybe he thought they'd try and see if he was in the house first." Mello looked down as his blackened bare feet.
After 24 hours passed, Officer Freeman called Mello and Miche into his office.
"Hello, boys." He smiled.
Mello sighed and looked away.
(He must be a morning person..)
"Well, your father never showed up, and we did some research.." Officer Freeman looked down at some papers. "Seems that your father might have owned someone some money, and fled the country."
"What?!" Mello shouted.
"Shhhhh! Keep your voice down in here! Anyway, I know this is hard for you boys..but I'm going to have to place you in an orphanage..."
"No!" Miche cried, "I don't wanna go to an orphanage!"
The officer sighed, "No one does, son. There are only two orphanages around here with enough room open..Crits and The Wammy's House. Crits is usually for older girls, ages 12 to 18, but they've offered to take you for the time being.."
"What about Wammy's?" Mello interrupted, he didn't want to be around a bunch of older girls who thought he was 'cute'.
"Uh, yes, The Wammy's House.." Officer Freeman fumbled with some papers. "Oh, here we are..The Wammy's House only accepts gifted and talented children..you must take a test to become a 'Wammy'. I'm not so sure about this, boys.."
"Okay." Mello said, "We'll take the test."
Miche just looked over at his brother, who looked very confident. Miche didn't know what Mello was thinking, Mello knew that Miche wasn't as smart as he was, even if Miche was older.
"Miha--" Miche started but Officer Freeman cut him off.
"Okay! If that's the way you want it. You'll both take the test for Wammy's tomorrow. Now, go on, I need to do some paper work."
